【 工作坊簡介 About the Workshop 】

Spring is lovely, spring is lovely, the beauty of spring is boundless.

This workshop is inspired by hand-painted tiles. Taiwanese hand-painted tiles originate from the "Majolica Tile"1 system and were introduced to Taiwan during Japanese Rule. These tiles are common in traditional architecture and blend local painting techniques and themes, establishing a distinctive decorative culture. Initially used in civilian buildings, they gradually became a significant material in Taiwanese temple architecture after the war. Hand-painted tiles often depict folk stories like The Twenty-four Filial Exemplars or auspicious motifs of landscapes, flowers, and birds, known for their intricacy and finesse. Once painted, the tiles are completed through a firing process, making each unique.

Hand-painted tiles are also the focus of artist Ni Jui Hung' s new work in this exhibition. She transforms Taiwanese folk stories based on her experiences, weaving past and present to create contemporary narratives. This workshop will explore how the artist re-presents traditional patterns and transforms them into clocks. Participants will reinterpret traditional Taiwanese auspicious motifs, gaining an understanding of their significance in Taiwanese folk culture. After completing their paintings, the tiles will be fired using traditional methods and returned to each participant, encapsulating the fascinating interplay between Taiwan’s unique local culture and contemporary art.

Note: 1. Commonly known as decorative tiles or colored porcelain, Majolica Tiles are ceramics where a layer of tin glaze is fired onto the surface of a brown, unadorned bisque, turning it white, upon which designs are then applied.
