Taiwan is Asia’s friendliest region in terms of homosexuality and ethnic diversity, we are fortunate not having to experience the Stonewall riots which occurred in New York City in 1969. Rights for homosexuals are gradually being incorporated into various social mechanisms, including legal protection and social benefits etc.
Just like the words of the late Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, “The revolution is not yet complete, compatriots still need to endeavor.” Under the system of heterosexuality, homosexuals are easily ignored; activities in the homosexual communities are even deliberately stigmatized.
Therefore, conscious awareness is constantly needed, it should also be demonstrated through actions; whether gay parades, establishing homosexual mutual support and consultation groups or organizing film appreciation festivals such as this one are all conveying the message of equality of rights.
Through these activities, the message conveyed to all homosexuals who have remained discreet or have already come out of the closet is, “You are not alone, your voices have been heard.” As for the majority heterosexual community, what these events are attempting to convey is that “In the modern society, which emphasizes diversity and openness, we have not done enough; the previous position on respect the differences seem to simply tolerance towards the matter, as it does not concern us personally.”
We need to strive forward further, to advance from the concept of respect the difference to appreciate the difference, so as to perceive the diversity of the society in a more positive light and with a more open heart. Films should be the most effective communications medium, thus let us start from appreciating the films!
