張照堂，從事影像藝術工作近半世紀，拍過無數震撼人心的作品，是國內把文學、劇場、詩性等概念注入攝影並賦予現代面貌的先驅攝影家。為今年第三十屆行政院文化獎唯一得主，是在前輩大師郎靜山得獎23年之後，再度獲得肯定的第二位攝影家。得獎主要原因是其作品展現臺灣社會變遷的各種精神面貌，忠實反映社會的發展，風格犀利而強烈，樹立現代攝影里程碑。
張照堂表示，自己透過攝影傳達「活在當下、尋找過去與想像未來」，「讓照片說話」為其一貫努力的目標。本次精選大師十餘年來紀錄片中10部，架構在「臺灣世紀回味」下，從庶民觀點回顧歷史過往，從個人生命史去領會時代的變遷，以人物角度切入，輔以昔時物件、器物、老照片、檔案影片、圖繪、電影、廣播、歌謠…等史料與實物，見證大時代的民間情感與脈動。

Chang Chao-Tang has been involved in the image arts for nearly half century, and he has captured countless awe-inspiring images; he is also the first photographer in Taiwan to infuse the concepts of literature, theatre and poetry into photography and endow them with contemporary appearance. As the only winner of the Executive Yuan’s 30th National Cultural Award, he became the second photographer to receive acknowledgment after his maestro predecessor Long Chin San 23 years ago. The main reason for receiving the award is that his works have demonstrated the various spiritual appearances of social transformations in Taiwan and truthfully reflected the social development at the time. The style is sharp and powerful, setting a milestone for contemporary photography.
According to Chang Chao-Tang, he has “lived the moment, searched the past and imagined the future” through photography, to “allow the picture to tell the story”. Ten of the maestro’s documentaries from the past decades have been selected for the Retrospective of Taiwan’s Past Century exhibition, where one may look back on history from the plebian’s perspective and appreciate the transformation of time through an individual’s life history. The exhibition is seen from a character’s viewpoint, supplemented by historical resources and physical objects, utensils, old photographs, archived films, sketches, films, radio broadcasts and songs at the time to witness the civil sentiments and pulsations of the Great Times.
