Workshop Introduction

The colors of the rainbow are vibrant and distinct, and yet they exist in harmony. The rainbow has become a symbol for the LGBT movement, representing life, sunshine, and equality. Despite the legalization of same-sex marriage, there are still various obstacles that challenge equality, such as the legality of having and adopting children or the understanding of family members. This residency aims to promote awareness of the realities and challenges of LGBT families and hopes to inspire the advancement towards an equal society.

This workshop focuses on issues regarding "same-sex couples" and "family structures," as well as the hardships they face and possible future challenges. The workshop will guide participants to imagine alternative mindsets through dialogue and role-play, encouraging learning and generating action through the transformative and creative tool of theatre.

The workshop will stage similar settings and scenarios that trigger internal and external conflicts and hardships for LGBT group members. The method will accentuate difficulties within families, the visible and invisible discrimination that they face due to their identity, and challenges in daily life. Attendants will also participate in a section of the creative process of theatre. In contrast to verbal discourses, the workshop allows participants to experience firsthand how “theatre methodologies” present a more three-dimensional view of problematic issues, structure actions, and generate experiences. Workshop proceedings include incorporating theatre activities, exploring social theatres, cultivating awareness of the problematics of old data, developing plots based on personal concerns, analyzing and playing characters, and experiencing and overcoming difficulties as a collective.
