Born in 1949 in Tainan, Taiwan, WANG Mo-Lin is a veteran theatre/culture critic, theatre director, and performance artist. Before 1991, when he established Body Phase Studio, Taiwan’s first alternative performing arts collective with a focus on interdisciplinary projects, Wang organized and produced October (1987), a grand-scale outdoor show in a worn-down warehouse on the beach, realizing the idea of ‘environmental theatre’. In 1988, he organized Taiwan’s first “action theatre” event, Dispel Orchid Island’s Evil Spirit.

In 1992, in Taipei, as Body Phase Studio’s inaugural event, he organized the Body and History: Performance Art Festival, featuring international artists Shimoda Seiji (Japan), Anneke Barge (the Netherlands), WONG Wan-Shen (HK), and HU Min-Shan Hu (Taiwan). In 2000, more than 10 participating artists arrived from different countries to present their works at the 1st Taiwan International Performance Art Festival hosted by Body Phase Studio. In the consecutive years between 2005 and 2007, several more festivals were organized, with over 50 participating international artists. A number of workshops have been designed and organized in recent years to encourage more younger-generation creative participation in performance art, and several internationally-active performance artists have been discovered as a result. Wang has been working and presenting performance art pieces at various venues and events in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Slovakia, Budapest, Beijing and Macau.

The years 2000 to 2006 saw Wang working as a writer and director of the Black Hole series presented in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei. Other directing credits include A Soldier’s Pay (2004), Next Hour (2007), and The Waste Land (2010), which, as part of the New Ideas Festival, are National Theater productions, as well as Tsou Oedipus (1997-1998), a version of Oedipus the King performed in the language of the Taiwanese aboriginal Tsou tribe by aboriginal actors, in both Beijing and Taipei. In 2010, he directed Mom, Bye!, a play commemorating the death of Korean labor activist Jeon Tae-il, in Busan, Korea; he also directed The Waste Land as part of the 2010 New Ideas Festival.

From 2005 to 2008, Wang served as Artistic Director at Guling Street Avant-garde Theater. His publications include Chinese Film and Theatre, Post-Showa Japan, Body and Urban Theatre and Essays on the Body.
