Type “performance art” into the search engine and large amounts of information related to “contemporary art” will appear. However, the information rarely extends to “contemporary theatre.” From the perspective of the history of contemporary art, “performance art” seems to be unrelated to theatre, but since Happening Art emerged in the 60s, it has been referred to more materialistically as Body Art in the 70s. By the 80s, as dance theatre, Ankoku Butoh, and Post-Modern Dance became the mainstream for bodily performance, the definition of “performance” was no longer restricted to a type of theatre, and “performance art” no longer merely referred to fine art. Although this type of “non-theatrical performance” sounds contradictory, it also expressed an art form that was artistic performance and theatrical performance at the same time. The integration of the body, action, and art has become an avant-garde Neo-Expressionism after the 90s.
Established in 1991 by WANG Mo-Lin, the goal of Body Phase Studio was to create a space to express the body. The culture of rebellion initiated by student movements in the 60s led to an anti-aesthetic art trend where fine art was mostly impacted by performance art, pushing bodily expression into the realm of performance art. The experimental theatre movement in Taiwan during the mid-80s was clearly a movement that emerged amid the shift from opposing political reality to art and aesthetic. During their early years in the 90s, Body Phase Studio established and insisted on their course in performance art through bodily performance. Taiwan’s first Taipei International Performance Art Festival (TIPAF) was initiated by Body Phase Studio.
