As I searched the streets of Taipei for faces to film, some verses began to appear in my mind.
I wrote them down:
"There is some light, there is a story.
Your face tells of the passage of time and places you have journeyed.
In your eyes, there is a tinge of confusion and sadness.
There is some light, there is a story.
Your face tells of love and the places it hides in.
In your eyes, there is a sparkle and some darkness."
This is the meaning of the film.

《光》是紀錄中山堂的臉譜，慶祝中山堂82歲生日升格為國定古蹟所拍攝，蔡明亮導演唯一一部沒有人物的電影，以近20分鐘的光影變化，長鏡頭的拍攝手法，紀錄中山堂建築的各個角落。其中也以特寫鏡頭，拍攝位於中山堂中央樓梯間的知名雕塑大師黃土水作品《水牛群像》，讓原本只能遠觀的作品，透過鏡頭紀錄細節，呈現在民眾眼前。

Light was created to commemorate Zhongshan Hall's 82^nd anniversary and the building's elevation into a national heritage. The work is TSAI Ming-Liang's only film that does not feature characters and instead documents the "face" and different corners of Zhongshan Hall, capturing the changes of light and shadow in the almost 20-minute long take. The film also includes close-ups of renowned sculptor HUANG Tu-Shui's artwork Taiwan Buffalo, located at the central staircase of Zhongshan Hall, allowing detailed inspection of the work that initially could only be admired from afar.
