Section 3 Third Person: Legacy

在關注自我與觀眾的層次之上,藝術家的作品最重要的功能就是標記自身在藝術領域的定位、自己的作品是否有帶給藝術世界的他者們現象級的影響。一如美籍韓裔藝術家白南準,空前地將黑白電視機作為藝術媒材使用,開啟了錄像藝術的先河。藝術家們都希望在自己的專業領域耕耘的同時,能累積創作能量、最終改寫藝術的定義並流傳到未來。

在展區【第三人稱:傳承】中,《 虹No.05 - 宇宙漂流 》 錨定了吳耿禎認為剪紙最重要的功能:「記錄剪紙者身處的自然與文化脈絡」。他在過去與剪紙合作社合作的蕭隴計劃中回到家鄉臺南,帶領社區媽媽進入鹽田、魚塭、廟埕、稻田、甘蔗園進行回憶與學習,剪出真正屬於地方居民的生命史;而幾件《 花園 》 系列作品則完美演繹了 Tim 認為剪紙中最關鍵的技巧:「2D空間的建築設計」。在所有 Tim 開設的剪紙課程中,入門第一課就是陰刻陽刻的練習,透過在草圖上細緻分析、篩選割下與保留的區域,確保能產出圖樣完整、結構堅固的「完整一張」作品。兩位駐校藝術家在豐富的教學經驗中最重視的事物、正是他們所希望傳承的剪紙精神。

Beyond the focus on self and spectatorship, the most prominent function of artworks is how these works can mark the artists in the history of art, i.e., whether these works bring to the others in the art world a phenomenal influence. Take the Korean American artist Nam June Paik (백남준, 1932-2006) for instance. He is the first to use black-and-white TV as an art medium and is considered to be the founder of video art. Like Paik, artists all hope to accumulate creative energy as they work hard in their respective fields of work, and, in the end, to redefine art and pass it on to the future generations.

In the third exhibition section, Pink Rainbow No.05 - Drifting in the Universe anchors the most prominent function that WU thinks papercutting carries - to record the natural and cultural contexts of the creator him/herself. In one of his past projects Soulangh Project (in collaboration with PapercutField), he went back to his hometown Tainan and brought the local women to the important sites of their community: salt pans, fish farms, temple yards, sugarcane fields, etc., where they walked down the memory lane and learned to create papercutting works which truly represent the life and history of locals. The Garden series, on the other hand, perfectly manifests what Budden regards as the most crucial technique of papercutting -- the architecture of two-dimensional space. In every course that Budden teaches, he always leads the students to explore the positive and negative space on paper (referred to as yin/yang carvings in Mandarin) in the first place. Via painstaking analysis on the draft, his students learn to decide where to get rid of and what to retain in order to ensure a solidly structured work in one piece. During their abundant teaching experiences, both the artists-in-residence wish to pass on one thing -- the spirit of papercutting which they cherish most.

剪紙作品「虹No.05 - 宇宙漂流」,作品裝置於展覽空間中心,七張一組的人造纖維剪紙作品,以一人個體為中心,周圍流動著漂流植物意象,呼應從圖書館出發的主題。

WU’s papercutting work Pink Rainbow No.05 - Drifting in the Universe is installed at the center of the exhibition space. The series constitute seven papercutting works made out of artificial fiber. The shape of a human at the center is surrounded by the imagery of drifting plants, echoing the topic that goes back to the library.

《 橘色之夢 》
Orange Dream

這兩件作品分別代表著花園的白晝與夜晚。作品裡是一座花園最美麗繁盛的完美時刻—花朵完全盛開、吸引著無數昆蟲採集甜美的花蜜。然而這樣的時刻只會持續非常短暫的時間,花朵凋謝、昆蟲消失如同生命循環至下一個週期。

在《 橘色之夢 》裡,五彩繽紛的牡丹花沐浴在溫暖的陽光下,巨大的蝴蝶降落在花朵飽滿的蜜腺上採食。進入這座色彩與香氣的理想花園的昆蟲們「嗅到」一股如同耀眼萬花筒般的彩色「氣味」,嗅覺與視覺混合成所謂的「聯覺」;而在《 夜間花園 》中,同一隻蝴蝶仍然在牡丹花上沉思,耐心等待黎明的到來。然而在黑暗之中,宇宙星體與花園似乎合而為一,恆星在花朵上閃爍、行星反射光澤、銀河漸漸擴張。在生命循環中,我們都來自這座花園、而我們終將回到這裡。

These two works, ‘Orange Dream’ and ‘Night Garden’ represent day and night in a garden. This is the moment when the garden is in its most beautiful, perfect state – the flowers are all in full bloom attracting numerous insects to feed on their sweet fresh nectar. This moment will only last a short time as the flowers will soon begin to fade and the insects will disappear as the life cycle moves to the next stage.

In ‘Orange Dream’ the flower, a Peony, is very colourful and attractive in the warm sunlight. Insects entering this idealized garden of colour and aromas ‘smell’ the scents of the flowers as if these scents are a bright kaleidoscope of colours, an experience referred to as synesthesia. A large butterfly sits on the flower feeding on its plentiful nectar. In ‘Night Garden’ the butterfly still sits, thoughtfully and patiently on the Peony waiting for the dawn to appear and a new day to begin. However in the darkness the universe and the garden have merged to become one. Among the flowers stars twinkle, planets glow and galaxies expand. In the cycle of life we all came from this and just like the garden we will go back to it.

民國78年藝文中心成立之初即在五樓成立「藝文展覽室」,專業的展場有著軌道投射燈與正式展版以供中西畫作、雕塑與攝影作品的展出。在近年的展場改善工程中改名為「藝文空間」,長期以「機構策展」的概念策劃當代藝術展覽、在當代攝影領域也多有著墨。
