《九歌聲音文件集結計劃》

九歌LOGO《九歌》作為一顆意念的種子,衍生自一種古老的抵抗精神,因為適當的環境因素而發芽。具體的源頭因子,是六・四的政治罣難。這敗壞的精神細胞,在太多經歷者的生命中,遺傳了上面提到的一種本能的反抗能願。

我作為《九歌》的初始召集人和這四年的維護者,早自八九・六四後就年度以「音樂」作為一個社群聚力點,在香港搞音樂祭。名堂由天安門音樂節、六・四音樂祭、異議聲音到後來的自由文化音樂節,多年未斷。然而音樂祭作為一項活動,有太多的人事、場地、器材、組織等關係串連才能成事。即便是小群體,意向與定義仍然成為集體工作多元的障礙。有一年,我覺得這個年度文化行動就讓有想法的年輕人去做吧,我把自己放開來,想做一件其它的事,《九歌》的靈感就來了。

Benefit Record、Memorial Record、Resistance Compilation、Solidarity Album…都是古老的手段和形式。我構思《九歌》計劃的時候,更多是接近documentarian、archival、art-gathering、sonic idea collage…諸般多維的想像。後來看到台灣VOICE的朋友打出的「聲音結社」提法,覺得就是一個大概如是氛圍吧。但我從來沒有太綱領式的要去定義、或自我價值化這件事,這集體的、文化行動路上的行旅。這也許該留給所有動心走在一起的朋友,讓作品、這些聲音文件,及其集結的「形成」,去開放自我定義、或者去定義化吧。定義一直以來都是自由被設障的開始。

於是,就有點心照不宣的默契,這幫朋友在我這念頭的召集下,擲來了要參與集結的作品。走下來,四年了。它延續的條件,完全是藝術與社會的單純互振。它沒有經濟預算,除首年難得香港ACO書店贊助其製作及生產開支,其後都是由參與者自願式(能負擔者出錢,無錢的出力)湊錢去完成實體唱片的出版。在這個全人被網路歸順的時代,我們還是先以網路的出版作為主要的公共發表方式。每年的《九歌》集結都是在六・四與七月期間在網路公開,繼後印成實體唱片,供支持者以購買作為一種互援的通路,去珍藏一片聲音的紀實。

在我個人的願望,《九歌》最終極的歸宿,應該是各地大學的圖書館。它一開始就不應該成為一種文化產業。它是一種集體行動的紀錄。這些紀錄是應該被保存成為民間文化史的參考文本。這也是我再三向參與的朋友解釋(並非規範),為何我視這些收集的聲軌作為「聲音文件」,我覺得它們的本質是文學的、紀實的、去除那些精緻華麗藝術的。

民間、非資助、作品主導、自主生產、開放定義、無條件自由集結、存留作為抵抗精神的延伸...也許這就是《九歌》回到藝術生命及其創造原點的一個輪迴。我在2016年九歌第一年的出版中寫過一段話,應可作為《九歌》四年的原生種子——


「我們守護,同時開墾」。


9 Songs Sound Documentary Project

The concept of 9 Songs was inspired by an ancient spirit of resistance, a seed that was able to sprout in suitable surroundings. The exact beginning of the project was the political turmoil of the Tiananmen Incident. This spirit of decay seeped into the souls of many, causing them to carry on an instinctive act of resistance.

I have been the convener for 9 Songs and its supporter for the past four years. Music has been a social assembling force ever since June 4th, 1989, giving birth to music festivals in Hong Kong, which has existed for many years in the name of Tiananmen Music Festival, June 4th Music Festival, Dizzidenza, and Freedom Culture and Music Festival. However, processes such as connecting human resources, venues, equipment, and organizations involved in music festivals are the key to its success. Even in small organizations, the vision and identity of the group become an obstacle for collective work. One year, I felt we should hand over the event to young people who have ideas about the annual cultural action. I freed myself and started another project. This was the birth of 9 Songs.

Benefit Record, Memorial Record, Resistance Compilation, Solidarity Album…these are all old methods and forms. When planning for the 9 Songs project, my thinking was closer to multidimensional visions such as documentarian, archival, art-gathering, and sonic idea collage. Then I saw the concept of "forming groups through sound" proposed by the people of Taiwan VOICE. I thought to myself, perhaps our spirit is similar to this idea. Nonetheless, I never defined or pinpointed our project, the journey of this collective cultural action. I thought that maybe the idea should be left for all those who have the same vision as us to allow the works, sound documents and the collective "formation" to define itself or even destruct its own definition. Definitions have always restricted freedom.

At this, we formed an unspoken understanding. This group of friends came together through my idea and collected works for the project. It has been four years since then, and the project was able to continue because of the simple consonance between art and society. This project does not have financial budgets, and apart from the funding from ACO bookshop, which sponsored the production and expense of the first year, the physical CD was able to be released through voluntary participation (either financial or physical participation). In a time when the entire culture has submitted to the internet, we chose digital publication as the main method of publication. 9 Songs is published on June 4th and July every year, first on the internet and later as physical disks, allowing supporters to form a network through purchase and for them to treasure each of our sound documents.

As for my personal wish, I hope that the final home for 9 Songs will be university libraries. The project was never meant to become a cultural industry but rather a documentation of collective actions. These documentations should be preserved as reference material for folk history, which is why I have been collecting these soundtracks as "sound documents," precisely what I have been explaining to participants (which is in no way a restriction). I believe this project has a literary, documentary essence that is removed of all exquisite elements of glamorous, fine art.

Nongovernmental, non-subsidized, work-orientated, free-produced, open-definitional, unconditional free assembly, preservation as resistance…perhaps this is a reincarnation of 9 Songs returning to the artistic life and its creative starting point. I wrote the following in 9 Songs' first release in 2016; the phrase may very well be the birthing place of 9 Songs over the past four years:


"We protect while cultivating."
