"Thawing Time", 2016 to present

冷凍與攝影的技術似乎在處理一樣的問題——試圖對時間進行質變。

就像在拍一張照片,冷凍的同時,食材從時間流中被取出;等到解凍時,時間就被釋放回去。在緩慢的解凍中,慣常的時間觀被打亂,而這個過程被壓縮成一張照片,讓「時間」本身得以被看見。照片上的時間記錄指的是冷凍物解凍的時間、同時也是底片曝光所累積的時間。這些照片並非留住某一刻的時間切面,它本身就是時間、也是人類對抗時間的一種方式。

本作是作者從人夫轉為人父之後的作品,除了探問時間的本體論以外,也回應作者因為身份轉變而不得不改變攝影習慣所產生的焦慮,對創作者自身的存在狀態提出疑問。

The technologies of freezing and photography seem to tackle the same issue, which is the attempt to execute qualitative change in time.

Just like taking a photograph, different foods are extracted from time when being frozen and time is reinstated when the thawing process begins. Time is disrupted throughout the slow procedure of thawing, and the process is compressed into a single photo, allowing “time” to be seen. The record of time shown in the photographs refer to the thawing time of the food and the accumulated time of film exposure. These photographs do not retain a certain section of time; rather, they are time itself, and a human method of fighting against time.

This work was created during a time when the artist was changing the role of husband to father. Apart from inquiring the ontology of time, the works also respond to the anxiety which arises from having to change photography methods to respond to the artist’s changing role in life and the artist’s contemplation on the existence of the self.


陳彥呈 | CHEN Yan-Cheng

1988年生於台中,現居台中。2013年開始自由攝影師工作。目前為專職奶爸,遊走於育兒、烹飪、家事等領域,也進行影像創作。

作品大多關於自身的生存現狀,再現當下的內心衝突與焦慮,試圖讓影像從生活經驗擴及到社會群體。他認為攝影的目的在於對自己提問,影像則是與自我對話的一種產物,而多數時候提出問題比找到解答更為重要。近期作品則回到攝影本身、開始嘗試向「攝影」提問。

Born in 1988, Taichung. CHEN is based in Taichung and started working as a freelance photographer since 2013. Currently a stay-at-home dad, CHEN explores the themes of parenting, cooking, and housework while creating image works.

Most of CHEN's works are related to his personal experiences and re-present moments of inner conflict and anxiety. The artist believes that the goal of photography is to raise questions for the self while images are products of self-dialogue. Most of the time, the question is more important than the answer. Recent works return to the essence of photography and raise questions about the art form.
