在攝影做為一種觀景窗與快門藝術的年代裡,張照堂也許是臺灣攝影史裡,藝術境界最高的一位攝影家。翻開張照堂的攝影履歷,洋洋灑灑不一而足:他從1958年就開始拍照,至今未歇寶刀不老,已整整半個世紀;他50年來有至少30次以上的攝影個展、聯展和策展紀錄,得獎無數,同時從事電視片、紀錄片與劇情片的創作、策展與教學;他策劃、主編、撰寫多種臺灣攝影家的叢書,與攝影主題的專書…。

這些赫赫的事功,也許說明了他對攝影創作和推動攝影文化的熱情與勤奮,但並不是我推崇張照堂為臺灣最優秀之攝影家的主要評斷依據。對我而言,張照堂是一位真正的藝術家。這不僅是由於他的多重才華與藝術境界,更在於他的藝術,和他這個人、他的生活、他的生命態度,是高度一致的。而且,他總是在一種既踏實於現實生活之中、靈魂又同時行走在世俗之外的奇妙狀態裡,使他做為一個藝術家,永遠有趣而不可預測。他是一位真正的藝術家,因為他根本不在乎「藝術家」等等這些頭銜或概念,而且嘲笑它。我想,他只在乎有趣的生活與炙熱的生命。

重新閱讀由他主編的「臺灣攝影家群象」(臺北:躍昇文化,1989)叢書中《張照堂》這一冊裡,由他自己所寫的短文〈非影像筆記〉,我發現其中一段札記,似乎生動貼切地映照了張照堂的某種生命狀態:

"加班到凌晨四點半,一個人站在十三樓等電梯,恍惚中抽著煙。指示燈上得很慢,長廊黑漆漆的,我好像聽到一種奇異的撞擊聲。電梯終於上來了,門一開,一隻犀牛從裡面擠了出來……"(1975.12.15.)

這是他小兒子出生的那一年,張照堂為了生活負擔不得不努力工作。但世俗的工作,從沒有拿走他自由遊蕩的藝術靈魂和狂想能力。他用如此的幻想力與幽默感,以拒絕被俗世的平庸生活所吸納、同化,也給予我們抵抗庸俗的想像和鼓舞力量。正是基於張照堂攝影創作背後的這種現實情境,使我們在觀看和分析他的攝影藝術時,必須將他所處的時代氛圍、生命情境、與他的人格特質等各種脈絡,一併閱讀,或許才能比較準確的理解和評斷張照堂的攝影藝術,和它的意義。    more » 一、時代背景

Figurelessness of a Mighty Figure: The Photographic Art of Chang Chao-Tang

In the era where photography is about the art of viewfinder and shutter, Chang Chao-Tang may be the artistic photographer of the highest caliber in Taiwan’s photographic history. Opening up the photography resume of Chang Chao-Tang, there is too much to mention. Having started photography in 1958, his skill remains as sharp as it was since he began nearly 50 years ago. For over half century, he has organized at least 30 solo photography exhibitions, joint-exhibitions and exhibition planning, which have won countless awards. At the same time, he is involved in the creation, curating and teaching of TV series, documentaries and drama series. He has also planned, edited and written numerous book series on Taiwanese photographers and photography.

Such glamorous accomplishments perhaps explain his passion and diligence towards photography and the promotion of photography culture. However, this is not the main reason why I praise Chang Chao-Tang as the most accomplished photographer in Taiwan. As far as I am concerned, Chang Chao-Tang is a genuine artist; this is not only due to his multiple talents and artistic attainment, but also the fact that his art, his person, his life and his living attitude are highly consistent. Furthermore, he is always in an intriguing state where he leads a realistic, down to earth life, yet his soul roams in the realm separate from the common customs; therefore, he is transformed into an artist who is always interesting and unpredictable. He is a genuine artist, since he does not care about title or concepts such as “artist”, instead he ridicules them. I believe that he only cares about an interesting lifestyle and a life full of passion.
