A machine, and a continuously spinning wire mesh. The composition of Wire II is simple, but it creates an infinite space in a moving image. The exposed mechanism of the work not only functionally produces the image, but more importantly, it also suggests a certain symbolism or metaphor.
Judging from its title, Wire II is obviously a sequel to Wire I, while it sheds a different light on its visual presentation. “If Wire I is compared to the misty and celestial atmosphere in Chinese landscape painting of Southern Song Dynasty, perhaps Wire II resembles the magnificent mountains and rivers in the painting of Northern Song Dynasty,” says the artist. The artist himself indicates that to talk about his works in an analogy with the characteristics of Chinese ink painting is to put his works at the risk of sloppy conceptualization. However, he also admits that the initial idea of the works, especially in the spatial and imagery aspects, was inspired by the “scroll,” a traditional form of framing in Chinese ink paintings.
